Good to know before you're going to work in the Netherlands:
So, you’re thinking about launching your career in the Netherlands? Great choice! Whether you’re coming for a fresh start, a new adventure, or a next step in your international journey, there are a few things that are good to know about working (and living!) in the land of bikes, canals, and straight talk. Here’s our guide with 9 essentials that will help you prepare and thrive.
1 Focus on big cities
If you’re not fluent in Dutch (yet), your best bet is to look for opportunities in and around the major cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht or Eindhoven. That’s where most international companies – and jobs that don’t require Dutch – are located. So, if you’re flexible in choosing where to live, let the job market guide you.
2 Keep your CV short and sharp
Dutch recruiters love efficiency. A two-page CV is the sweet spot – clear, relevant, and to the point. Showcase what matters most, skip the fluff, and tailor it to each job you apply for.
3 Dutch directness: it’s real
The Dutch are famously direct. Don’t be surprised if feedback sounds blunt – it’s usually not personal. It’s just how things work here. You’ll get used to it quickly, and might even come to appreciate how honest and clear it makes communication.
4 Get your basics in order
Before you can officially start working, make sure you’ve got these essentials sorted: BSN number (you’ll get this when you register in your place of residence), bank account number, European nationality and/or work permit and health insurance. These are your keys to get started and settled.
5 Less hierarchy, more ownership
Forget the corner office and rigid hierarchies. Dutch workplaces are often flat in structure. Managers see themselves as part of the team and expect input from everyone – yes, even the new guy or girl. That might take some getting used to, but it also means your voice matters from day one.
6 Learn Dutch (even just a bit)
You can get by with English just fine – especially in international environments – but speaking some Dutch goes a long way. Want to feel truly part of your team or join in on casual lunch chats? Start learning the basics. Locals will love you for it.

7 Show who you are
Your personality matters. Dutch companies care about who you are, not just what you can do. They’re looking for people who fit their team culture. So let your authentic self shine in your application and during interviews. It’s not just about skills – it’s about connection.
8 LinkedIn is your friend
A strong LinkedIn profile can open doors. Make sure it’s complete, up to date, and tells your story. Add your contact info, write a short and catchy summary, and don’t be shy about showing what you’re proud of. Need help? Ask ChatGPT to help you write a compelling profile!
9 Get yourself a bike
Yes, really. Biking is a way of life here – for everyone, from students to CEOs. It’s the fastest (and healthiest) way to get around, and a perfect way to explore your new surroundings. Bonus: no more traffic jams or expensive public transport!
